| Donate
Life
California is an organization that encourages organ and
tissue donation. They are the pink dot on your driver's license
organization. A suitable donor has the potential of benefitting
up to 50 people by donating his organs and tissue. After lunch, Gary Foxen, a lung recipiant, spoke
to us about the benifits of donation. Without a lung transplant
his prognosis was not good; he has had 12 years of life thanks to
donation. One can register at the DMV or on the organization's
website, http://www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org Garden Grove City Concilman Kris Beard was an honored guest. In brief remarks he touched on the effects of the California Supreme Court redevelopment agency decision. Thank you Kris. We hope to see you at future luncheons. |

club's future and a methodology to make it happen. Paolo, the
Past President of the Varese-Verbano Rotary Club seemed to fit right
in. We certainly enjoyed him and his grand sense of humor as did
Errol with his newly found copy of Robert's Rules of Order. Bryon Holt and Joe Hammer were honored with Paul Harris plus 6 and 5 respectively. Dwight Tompkins is looking for input for a mid March trip to visit our sister club in Mexico. The Gates Foundation added another 50 million to help Rotary fight Polio. |

candidate, receives a check from club president Errol Giuliano. Brett is
attempting to raise money to purchase to the supplies needed to build
10 podiums for Bell Junior High School. When completed, this
public service project will qualify Brett as an Eagle Scout.

thirds of the money needed; the Garden Grove Rotary Club
voted to fund the rest. Honored guest: Brett was accompanied by his father, Garden Grove City Councilman Kris Beard. Danny Krebs was also an honored guest. This is Danny's second meeting. Danny is a candidate for club membership. |
| Gayle
Knight founder of H.O.P.E.
(Helping Others Prepare for Eternity) spokes to us about her
organization. HOPE is a non-profit organization designed to help
disadvantaged women and children learn the life skills needed to "get
on their feet" and to function in today's world. It is an
organization with an emphasis on the positive reinforcement and
encougarement. HOPE is staffed in the main by volunteers thru
their M&M (Mentors and Mentees) program. They supply what is
needed, be it a scholarship, rental assistance or a job skill.
Gayle started in 1997 by driving people to church. Now it has
grown to have its own office on Main Street here in Garden Grove.
Our hat is off to Gayle and her organization. The Garden Grove Rotary Club will be dark for the rest of the year. Our next meeting will be on January 4th, 2012. We hope you will enjoy the holidays and have a prosperous new year. |

| Dave
Cisneros from Moark a
national egg producer came to tell us about modern egg production
methods. Back in the day,
chickens wondered about the barnyard eating what ever they could fine,
chicken feed, bugs, barnyard droppings and the like. Fresh eggs
were where you found them, when you found them, some time just after
they were laid and some times days later. All organic eggs were
not possible. Today, hens are housed in climate controled barns where they are protected from the weather, hawks, cyotes and barnyard filth. They are fed a controlled diet that can be all organic or mixed. When a hen lays an egg it is caught, conveyed, washed and packaged without ever being touched by a human hand. Because an outbreak of contaminated food can lead to the destruction of the flock and shutdown of the facility, producers go to great lenghts to prevent that from happening. Since happy healthy hens lay more and better eggs, keeping them that way is good business. |

| Jennifer Cabral spoke to us
about the County's process for reclaimiming waste water. At a
cost half that of San Fransisco, $267.00 per houehold, Orange County
turns raw sewage into water clean enough to drink. Much of the
water undergoes one more cleaning step before it is recycled
into the ground water supply. Other by-products of the system are
compost for fertilizer and natrual gas used to run generators. Jeremy Harris, President and CEO of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce was an honored guest. Come back and have lunch again soon. Arshad Rokerya was selected to be our entrant for the 2011 Business Leadership Award. Tailgate Party Saturday Night: contact Bryon Holt for admission details. | Elaine
Ma'as and Marti Carol
spoke to us about the Moving Wall, a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in
Washington. The Moving Wall is coming to Garden Grove, October
6-10th. Like the one in Washington the wall contains the names of
the 58,253 US soildiers who gave it all. The Wall is
moving
in an emotional sense. As a veteran of that war, thought I had
left that baggage behind until I saw my reflection against the names of
six men I knew well. I was standing in the sunshine; they were in
the wall. How unjust! Complete details can be found at
http://vietnam.garden-grove.org/?q=MovingWall Do visit The Moving Wall. Gillian Bradshaw, Assistant Area Govenor was an honored guest. |

Our scheduled speaker, Laura Schwaim,
was forced to postpone her talk. She is now scheduled to speak
to us in September. In her place Dr Jim Boyce spoke about the
devastation in Joplin, Missouri done by the tornado. Doctor
Boyce brought a collection of pictures to give us a sense of the damage
and it was extensive. His pictures remind one of the those of
post World War II Germany. It is difficult to imagine that all of
that distruction was caused by wind. In other happenings: Gordon Morimoto, son-in-law to Don Alexander, came by to have lunch. Gordon brought a beautiful golf bag to contribute to our Reverse Raffle Steak Dinner. That will be a much coveted item. For our support, our club was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the Garden Grove Police Department's Baker to Vagas Running Team. |
| The Sung Hwan Kim family came to have
lunch with us today. Sung is a Rotarian from our sister
city club in Anyang, Korea. He brings greetings from them and a

Douglas R. Benoint EdD, Dean of
Technology Programs at Orange Coast College addressed us on the current
condition of the community college system. Often people who
have lost their jobs turn to the community college system to bolster
their resumes. At the same time, the slow down in the economy has
put a strain on funding for public education. So, when it is
needed most, the system is throttled back. Compounding the
problem is tuition. Tuition pays a fraction of the cost of the
instruction and California student's tuition is a fraction of tuition
paid by students in other states. Moreover, in California tuition
flows into state coffers not back into the system that produced it. |

San Juan
Capistrano
Mayor, Sam
Allevato,

The new Club President conducts his
first assembly, where he presented a budget, announced his new board
and laid out his goals for the year. This promised to be a
year of fun. A person or persons unknown shamelessly stocked the clubroom cabinets and tables with bottles of peppers. Such promotional practice is against club policy. Since those responsible could not be identified, every member of the club was fined $25.00. The collected money will be sent directly to help our sister Rotary Club in Joplin, Missouri. The Club also voted to contribute $1000.00 to help restore the Gem Theater. |

Arshad
Roerkya, manager of the Garden Grove branch of Fullerton
Community Bank addressed us about the banking industry
today. Lending money is the way a bank earns a
profit. New regulations and new reserve requirements have greatly
diminished the amount of money banks have to lend. There is
little wiggle room for a bank to risk a bad loan. Banks have had
to look for other ways to turn a profit. Consolidations and
service fees are amoung them. The Garden Grove branch has recently been sold to Southland Credit Union, while the remainder of Fullerton Community Bank has been sold to Opus Bank. Southland Credit Union is impressed with the customer service given by the Garden Grove branch as good customer service is their hallmark. In other news, Leah Cecil called in from the Miss California competition with a report that things are going well that we will not be ashamed of her standings. Now, how could any one be ashamed of Leah? Good luck Leah! It was also announced that our District, 5320, is only one of two who have 100% Paul Harris clubs. A Paul Harris club is one in which every member is a Paul Harris fellow. |

Volunteer Program Manager at the Center. The Tiger Woods Learning
Center is operated by the Tiger Woods Foundation. Its mission is
to offer youngsters opportunities they would not otherwise have by
introducing them to the career applications of science, math and
technology and of course golf. Tiger Woods was born in Cypress
and grew up in the Anaheim area. He desired to give others the
wider opporunities that he was given. So, he has located the
first of what he hopes are many learning centers in this area. The Tiger Woods learning Center is located at One Tiger Woods Way in Anaheim, California. It is open to all youngsters of the 5th through the 12th grade. |
